named in what must be an homage to the japanese movie 'tampopo' that involved the search for the perfect noodle, 'tanpopo''s noodles are about as close as one can get in the twin cities. for those that enjoyed the delectable noodles in the cramped and sonorous selby avenue space, check out the new airy warehouse space in downtown st. paul. it is a bastion of serenity. the original plank floors have been stained to match a number of interesting handmade wood tables and bars that look incredibly inviting. fresh flowers are a staple. feng shui ain't got nothin' on this place.

the cuisine. those who have traveled to japan will be taken back in time. those who have not been to japan will want to go. the menu includes a special sushi roll of the day, as well as a series of authentic japanese entrees. yes, there is tempura, but japanese fans will be excited about the lunch bento specials, as well as some interesting fish and meat bowls. all food is served in handmade pottery bowls. we had some sushi rolls that tasted incredibly fresh, served on delicate blue and white plates with the appropriate accompaniments. ahhh....

the noodles. hot and cold dishes are served, and diners can choose from either udon or soba in their dish. whe bowls come with an array of additions - wild mushrooms, spinach, egg, seaweed shavings - that warms one's heart. each bowl comes with its own tiny dish of hot spices for the top. we each had the wild mushroom soba and it was more than enough to fill us up. the service was quite friendly, but can fall off when the place is busy. we got just the right amount of attention and were refilled and filled without needing to ask.

it was a relaxing, cozy meal on a cold cold night.
